Plot summary
Work as private detectives brings Stanley and Ollie from Peoria, Illinois, to Mexico City, where they are to bring in Hattie Blake, a thief known as Larceny Nell. Richard K. Muldoon is nearby, a sports promoter who served a prison term after the testimony the two men gave in Peoria, a conviction that cost him his reputation and his livelihood. Photographs of Don Sebastian, a celebrated Spanish matador, enrage Muldoon, because the bullfighter's face is Stanley's. When Blake seizes the extradition papers and gets away, Hot Shot Coleman, Muldoon's associate, pushes Stanley to impersonate Don Sebastian at an upcoming bullfight, with a reward promised, and Stanley agrees under the threat of exposure to Muldoon.

- Frank McCown, who later became famous as Rory Calhoun, made his film debut in The Bullfighters, which was also Laurel and Hardy's last American film.
- The film's revenge plot was reworked from Laurel and Hardy's short Going Bye-Bye!, and an egg-breaking sequence was reprised from the MGM all-star feature Hollywood Party, with gags reused from The Fixer Uppers and Way Out West.
