Plot summary
Gypsy caravans make camp at the edge of a wood that belongs to Count Arnheim, a nobleman who does not permit Gypsies on his land, and the travelers amuse themselves with songs and dances. Stan and Ollie are the group's misfits. Oliver's wife bosses him about, and while he is away at his zither lessons, picking pockets or telling fortunes, she takes up with Devilshoof. After the Count has Devilshoof lashed, the Gypsies must run, and Mrs. Hardy, wanting revenge, carries off Arline, the Count's small daughter, and tells Oliver the child is his own, which he believes. She then leaves with Devilshoof, and the toddler stays behind with Oliver and Stan.

- The Bohemian Girl was banned in Malaysia over its depictions of Roma themes, and was also banned in Nazi Germany because of its positive depiction of gypsies; propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels said it "had no place" in the Third Reich.
- Thelma Todd died while The Bohemian Girl was in production, and the part she had been given in the Laurel and Hardy film was originally supposed to be much larger than it ended up.
- The 1936 Laurel and Hardy feature was the last of thirteen pictures that Mae Busch and Oliver Hardy appeared in together.
