Biography

Mae Busch was a Melbourne-born actress whose Hollywood career spanned silent pictures and talkies. Born into a vaudeville family on June 18, 1891, she toured with her parents as a teenager before taking the female lead in Over the River in 1912. After joining Keystone Studios in 1915, she became known on screen as a versatile vamp, with major roles in Erich von Stroheim's Foolish Wives (1922) and opposite Lon Chaney in The Unholy Three (1925). A leading part in Hal Roach's Love 'em and Weep (1927) connected her to Laurel and Hardy, and she later played Hardy's put-upon or combative wife in Unaccustomed as We Are (1929), Sons of the Desert (1933), and The Bohemian Girl (1936), her final film with the team. She accumulated around 130 film roles over a career that stretched from 1912 through 1946.
