Plot summary
Drafted in 1917, Stan and Ollie fumble at drill until the sergeant hands them over to kitchen duty, and a delivery of garbage cans to the general's quarters lands them in the stockade. Among the soldiers they meet Eddie Smith, whose little daughter has been left an orphan. When the fighting ends, the two veterans set out to put the girl with Eddie's own family. That means finding Eddie's father, and New York City holds a great many men named Smith. Address after address brings them to the wrong household, while the Welfare Association wants the child back in its care.
