Plot summary
While taking their lunch break outside a bank, Stan and Ollie get in the way of a robber running from the building, and the man is caught. The bank's president is grateful and offers the pair jobs. Ollie replies that they do not have the schooling for such positions, so the president pays for the two of them to study at Oxford instead. In England, the students there put the newcomers through a campaign of hazing.

- A Chump at Oxford was first made as a 42-minute featurette, but distributor United Artists rejected that version and forced Hal Roach to add 21 minutes of new action to turn it into a full-length film.
- The added scenes partially reworked the silent Laurel and Hardy film From Soup to Nuts (1928), showing the pair seek work at an employment agency and as maid and butler at a society party.

Stan Laurel used an upper-class received pronunciation accent as Lord Paddington, the only time he used a voice different from his usual "Stan" on film.
