Plot summary
During World War II, Stan and Ollie hold down jobs as janitors at a detective agency. A caper centered on a bomb known as The Big Noise brings the pair to Alva P. Hartley, the bomb's inventor, and makes them improbable bodyguards to him. Passing themselves off as detectives, they befriend Hartley and contend with his idiosyncrasies and with his quirky relatives. The device is strategically important, and criminals in the same neighborhood are already scheming to pilfer it, which leaves two janitors standing between the bomb and the people who want it.

- Stan Laurel said that in The Big Noise he and the team slashed every gag that might conceivably bear on wartime wastage and destruction, having already cut out automobile chases and food-wasting gags when the war started.
- Stan Laurel proposed moving the claustrophobic train-berth scene from Berth Marks into a transcontinental airplane for The Big Noise, but producer Sol M. Wurtzel declined the idea.
