Plot summary
In Waterloo, Kansas, a talent contest promises the winner a part in a movie, and Cecilia Moore takes first place. The organizer runs off with the cash, so the prize never arrives, and Joe Jenkins, the master of ceremonies, takes some of the blame and promises to launch her career in Hollywood. He sells his garage and goes on ahead, but the only work he finds is bussing tables at a nightclub, and his letters home claim he is a successful entertainer. Meanwhile Rinaldo Lopez, a movie idol, turns up in Waterloo after his plane sets down there unexpectedly, and two of the other passengers give up their tickets so that Cecilia and her sister Nellie can travel with him to Hollywood.
