Plot summary
Dr. Henry Tibbett works as a country doctor in Mississippi in 1870. His daughter Mary is engaged to Jeff Carter, the son of a prominent and socially snobbish family who would gladly find a reason to call the wedding off. Professor McCrackle comes to town with a traveling circus and asks the doctor to heal his sick elephant, a beast named Zenobia. Once the animal recovers, it grows so devoted to Tibbett that it trails after him wherever he goes. McCrackle sues the doctor for alienation of affection. The Carters seize on the situation, and Mary's engagement is put in danger.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Zenobia (1939)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Zenobia is one of the few films after the teaming of Laurel and Hardy to feature Hardy without Stan Laurel, the result of a contract dispute with producer Hal Roach, who kept separate contracts for each performer rather than a team contract that would have offered them more control over their careers.
- The 2018 biopic Stan and Ollie repeatedly references this movie as "the elephant movie" and shows Laurel resenting Hardy for making it, but in reality it was Laurel himself who urged Hardy to keep working at Hal Roach Studios without him.
