Nestor Paiva
Biography
Nestor Paiva was an American actor of Portuguese descent who worked across stage, radio, film, and television. Born in California in 1905, he studied at the University of California, Berkeley, where he acted in campus and off-campus productions and directed plays. After graduating, he became director of the Eight O'Clock Players at radio station KLX in Oakland. He went on to appear in more than 400 motion pictures, often as an extra, a bit player, or a supporting character, and by the 1950s he was also working steadily in television. His notable screen roles included Lucas, the boat captain in Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) and its sequel Revenge of the Creature (1955), and the innkeeper Teo Gonzales in Walt Disney's Zorro and the theatrical release The Sign of Zorro (1958). He also appeared in many series and voiced characters in the animated Jonny Quest. He died in 1966.

After he graduated, Paiva was hired to serve as director of the Eight o'Clock Players, a troupe based at KLX radio in Oakland, California.
Beyond film
Paiva also acted in the early CBS radio version of Gunsmoke. He appeared in the first-season episode "Wild West", which originally aired on July 18, 1953.

Paiva did voice work for television, lending his voice to various characters in Jonny Quest, the Hanna-Barbera animated adventure series that ran for 26 episodes from 1964 to 1965.
Early training
Nestor Paiva attended the University of California, Berkeley, and while he was a student there he acted in campus and off-campus stage productions. In July 1929 the Berkeley Playhouse cast him in Robert E. Sherwood's comedy The Queen's Husband and in Meet the Wife by Lynn Starling.
