Plot summary
Georges Iscovescu, a Romanian gigolo, has spent six months at the Esperanza Hotel in a Mexican border town, waiting for a US quota number that could take years. Broke and unhappy, he runs into Anita Dixon, his former dancing partner, who tells him she gained citizenship by marrying an American and divorcing him soon after. Georges adopts the same plan. His target is Emmy Brown, a schoolteacher on a day trip to Mexico with about fifteen boys. He stretches out the repairs to her car, and while she and her pupils sleep in the hotel lobby, he sits nearby and woos her, claiming she is the image of a lost love. They marry that same day, and she returns home with the boys while he waits to cross.
