John Agar

Biography

John Agar was an American actor who worked in film and television, moving from studio westerns to low-budget science fiction and horror. Born in Chicago, he made his debut in the John Ford western Fort Apache (1948) and played the romantic lead in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949). He supported John Wayne in Sands of Iwo Jima (1949), a hit that earned him good reviews. At Universal he starred in Revenge of the Creature (1955), Tarantula (1955) and The Mole People (1956); that contract ended after he said he had tired of playing nothing but science fiction. John Wayne then gave him supporting roles in The Undefeated (1969), Chisum (1970) and Big Jake (1971). He later took small parts in Miracle Mile (1988), Nightbreed (1990) and King Kong (1976), and he worked often in television.
