Plot summary
The Gill-man, who survived being shot, is captured on a return expedition up an Amazon tributary, stunned with dynamite and shipped to the Ocean Harbor Oceanarium in Florida. There he is put on display and handed to science, and animal psychologist Clete Ferguson and ichthyology student Helen Dobson take on the job of studying him while crowds come to look at the half-man, half-fish. Helen and Clete quickly become close, which does not sit well with Joe Hayes, the Gill-man's keeper, and the creature takes an instant liking to Helen that gets in the way of Clete's attempts to communicate with him.
