Plot summary
Johnny Dalton works as a teller at California Fidelity Trust, where Mildred Goodhue, whom he wants to marry, works alongside him. His boss, J. L. McKissack, turns down his request for a raise; Mibs says she would marry him anyway, and Emile J. Keck, a waiter at the Italian restaurant the two of them frequent, tells Johnny to take a chance. In an alley Johnny steps in when two men attack a third. The victim, "Hot Horse" Harris, is a bookie, and he offers Johnny $1,000 in thanks, which Johnny accepts only as a loan. Harris stakes the money on a race he knows is fixed, and the winnings, with two further bets, reach $60,000. The bank's auditors, meanwhile, find $75,000 missing from the accounts.
