Plot summary
Demetrios, a Greek fisherman, and his father pull Princess Antillia from a shipwreck, not knowing that she comes from Atlantis, a civilization far ahead of their own. He must carry her beyond the Pillars of Hercules to her homeland, and a submarine shaped like a giant fish takes them aboard near the continent. The reward he expects for her return never comes; he is enslaved. In the volcano at the center of Atlantis, slaves dig out power crystals that soak up the sun's rays. The stones once gave light and heat, and now they are made into weapons that fire heat rays. King Kronas is manipulated by Zaren, an ambitious usurper, and by the court sorcerer Sonoy the Astrologer, who wants the crystals used to conquer the known world.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Atlantis: The Lost Continent (1961)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Atlantis, the Lost Continent is known for reusing stock footage from other films, including the Oscar-winning Quo Vadis and The Naked Jungle, and props such as the temple idol from The Prodigal and Krell gauges from Forbidden Planet. Told that the costumes and props were thousands of years apart, George Pal replied, "Who knows?"
- In June 1960, Italian sword-and-sandal actor Fabrizio Mioni, known for playing Jason in Hercules, was signed as the lead, but his work visa expired and he had to leave the U.S., so Sal Ponti, billed as Anthony Hall, replaced him. John Dall, just off Spartacus, was cast as the villain.
- The prologue describing the legend of Atlantis uses stop-motion animation that producer George Pal had developed earlier in his career for his innovative Puppetoons series.
