Plot summary
In a dirty steel town called Green Hill, Helen Chernen is an ambitious woman who wants to escape poverty. She arranges a marriage between her younger sister Katie and Albert Runkel, a singer and dancer. Katie has no interest in Albert, but she wants a better life. Albert's partner, Paul Collins, realizes that Helen has deeper intentions and tries to prevent her from breaking Albert's heart.

- Bette Davis and Ginger Rogers were both offered the role of Helen Chernen in the film, and both turned it down; the part was then cast with Ida Lupino.
- Vincent Sherman's film used an Irwin Shaw story that was reportedly based on Ginger Rogers' relationship with her first husband, Jack Pepper, whom she married in 1928 at age 17, and her mother Lela.
- Jack L. Warner insisted on adding the film's first and last scenes, and he also demanded that Ida Lupino appear more glamorous in the film's opening.
- Portions of a documentary film by Pare Lorentz stood in for the mining town of Green Hill, and neither Ida Lupino nor Joan Leslie wore makeup in those scenes to make them feel more realistic.
