Plot summary
In 1864, Lieutenant Frank Hewitt, a Texan, serves with the U.S. Cavalry under Colonel John Chivington. On patrol he meets unarmed Indians returning to the Sand Creek reservation, and the colonel orders an attack on them. Hewitt expects the tribes to unite in revenge and spread raids across the Southwest, his own hometown included, and he says so. Arrested and confined to quarters, he deserts to warn the Texans. His former neighbors, most of the men now away fighting for the Confederacy, treat the Union officer as a traitor and refuse to listen. Hewitt gathers the town's women into a brigade and teaches them to shoot and to fight.
