Plot summary
Simone Pistache owns the Bal du Paradis, a Montmartre cabaret where the can-can is danced nightly, and she performs in the show herself. The dance is viewed as lewd, and the police raid the café. Claudine and the rest of the dancers are arrested and taken to court. Paul Barrière, the chief magistrate, wants the charges dropped, but Philippe Forrestier, a younger colleague, argues that the laws against public indecency must be enforced. François Durnais, Simone's lawyer and lover, brings Paul to the café on the night of the raid. Philippe visits the cabaret under an assumed name to gather evidence and meets Simone there.

- While Can-Can was filming, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev visited the 20th Century Fox studios and was allegedly shocked by what he saw. He used the visit as propaganda, calling the dance, and by extension American culture, "depraved" and "pornographic".
- Frank Sinatra was paid $200,000 plus a share of the profits for Can-Can, but he took the role only because 20th Century-Fox contractually required it after he had walked off the set of Carousel in 1955.
- A version of "I Love Paris" sung by Frank Sinatra and Maurice Chevalier went on the soundtrack album but was cut from the film after previews, when the studio decided it slowed the picture down.
- Can-Can gave dancer Juliet Prowse her first speaking role in a feature film, in a cast led by Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine, Maurice Chevalier and Louis Jourdan.
- The screenplay shifted the lead from the judge to the nightclub owner's lover, adding a love triangle absent from the stage play, and expanded Paul Barriere, a non-singing supporting part on Broadway, into a role with two songs for Maurice Chevalier.
