Dewey Robinson
Biography
Dewey Robinson was an American film character actor whose screen credits number more than 250, spanning the years 1931 to 1952. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, he first acted on the Broadway stage in 1922 in The Last Warning, a melodrama that achieved 238 performances during a seven-month run. His subsequent stage work included a 1925 comedy called Solid Ivory. Robinson made his movie debut in 1931 as a waiter in George Cukor's Tarnished Lady, a part that received no screen credit. His imposing physical presence made him a natural for gangster films, and he earned a billed role in Murder on the Campus (1934). During the 1940s he belonged to Preston Sturges's informal company of character actors, appearing in eight pictures by that director. Near the end of his career he took the part of a Brooklyn Dodgers supporter in The Jackie Robinson Story (1950).
