Plot summary
Jim Lane is a test pilot. He makes a forced landing on a Kansas farm, where he meets Ann Barton. The two pass the day together and fall in love. Gunner Morris, Jim's best friend and mechanic, arrives, and Jim pays Ann no further attention. To stir him, Ann gets engaged to her sweetheart. Jim leaves the next morning, then comes back for her, and they marry quickly. Ann and Gunner try to keep Jim sober, and his work is far from safe.

- Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy had an uneasy relationship while making Test Pilot, though Loy and Gable became friends. During a lengthy take in which Gable cradled Tracy's head in his arms, Gable was reported to have said, "Die, goddamn it, Spence! I wish to Christ you would!" and dropped Tracy's head with a thud.
- The film used authentic United States Army Air Corps airfield settings and won rights to film Boeing's new Y1B-17, the progenitor of the wartime B-17 bomber. The Drake Bullet was actually an SEV-S2 NR70Y, a modified civilian racer version of the U.S. Army Air Corps P-35.
