Plot summary
Denton Offutt hires Abe Lincoln and two friends to carry a cargo of pigs downriver toward New Orleans, Abe's first time away from home. The boat jams at a dam near New Salem, and there Abe falls for Ann Rutledge, whose father keeps the local tavern. When Offutt offers him work at his store in the town, Abe accepts. He finds that Ann already has a beau, and he becomes New Salem's most popular man through his ready, good-natured humor, studying under Mentor Graham, the local schoolteacher. Ann's suitor leaves to improve himself, and Abe tells Ann of his love; unsure of her feelings, she asks for time.
