Plot summary
Martinius Jacobson farms in Wisconsin. He is a Norwegian immigrant, and his wife is Bruna. Their daughter Selma is seven. Her cousin Arnold, five, is her playmate and often bothers her. Martinius wants to farm the land and to be a loving husband and father. The town of Fuller Junction, Wisconsin, is settled by Norwegian farmers. Viola Johnson arrives as the new schoolmarm. She pleads with Ingeborg Jensen's father to let his daughter attend school, and he refuses.
