Plot summary
On Mulberry Street in downtown Manhattan, Clutch, a former boxer, is getting ready for the homecoming of his daughter Casey, a soldier who has just come back from Iraq. His neighbors in the tenement include Kay, a waitress, her teenage son Otto, the drag queen Coco, and Frank, who is very sick. Across the city a disease is spreading among the rats, and those bitten turn into hungry rat-like creatures that regard the people around them as food. After attacks in subway stations, the city halts public transport, and hospitals fill with the wounded. As the outbreak reaches the neighborhood, Clutch works to keep the tenants together and to protect Casey.

- Nick Damici and Jim Mickle had to fight their representatives to keep the title Mulberry Street; the representatives wanted something more evocative of the horror boom, while the filmmakers wanted to emphasize the theme of gentrification.
