- John Ashley said Young Dillinger was basically assembled from producer Al Zimbalist's footage of machine guns and crashing cars left over from the 1957 film Baby Face Nelson.

- While Young Dillinger was in production, the management of Allied Artists was caught up in a proxy fight with rebellious shareholders.
- John Ashley, Nick Adams and Robert Conrad were all divorced at the time and were living together in Adams's house when the film came along through Allied Artists. Ashley called it possibly the most fun of everything he ever did.
