Plot summary
Danny McKee, an electrician from the power plant, is sent to tell Dr. Erik von Steiner, Dr. Steve Connors and Carol White to shut down the time-viewing device they are testing, which draws enormous power. The screen shows a barren landscape, and Danny steps through it; the others follow to call him back, and the portal vanishes behind them. Mutants chase the four into a cave that leads to an underground city, the last remnant of a civilization destroyed by nuclear war. Dr. Varno, the city's leader, explains that the year is A.D. 2071 and that the ruined Earth can no longer sustain life, so the residents and their androids are racing to finish a spacecraft bound for a planet orbiting Alpha Centauri. Barred from the voyage, the four set to work rebuilding their portal.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Time Travelers (1964)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- With too small a budget to realize the story's effects, director Ib Melchior fell back on conjuring tricks; in one uncut shot a masked actor playing an android seems to have his head removed and replaced by another before walking away.
- Forrest J Ackerman, then editing the science-fiction magazine Spacemen, appears 44 minutes in as a technician whose only line is "Don't worry. I'm keeping our spacemen happy. Getting things squared away."; his character works on a device that turns a circular frame into a square frame.
- The Time Travelers went on to inspire the 1966 TV series The Time Tunnel and the 1967 remake Journey to the Center of Time.
