Plot summary
Susan Vega and Lorenzo Xavier Vega have been married for more than five years, and Lorenzo, a chemical engineer, has let his work crowd out his wife. When Susan wishes aloud for a more attentive husband, her Guardian Angel appears, visible only to her. The angel advises her to take a greater interest in Lorenzo's career, and she agrees to join him on a camping trip where he plans to test an insecticide he developed at Finlay Vega Chemical Co.

- The script had originally been written in the 1940s as a vehicle for William Powell and Myrna Loy, and later Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn were lined up for it before that plan fell through too.
- Cary Grant was the reported choice to play the guardian angel in March 1955, but his salary demands were too high, so the role went to James Mason instead.
- I Love Lucy writers Madelyn Pugh and Bob Carroll Jr. were brought in uncredited to punch up a script Desi Arnaz found weak, and their contribution was the slapstick camping sequence in the film's final third.
- The film's poor box office, a $188,000 loss for MGM, led the studio and Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz to cancel their production deal, and their company Desilu did not make another film for eleven years, until Yours, Mine and Ours.
- Programmers at Radio City Music Hall, where The Long, Long Trailer had premiered, refused to let the film open there at all because they found it "sub-standard".
