Biography

Jemaine Clement is a New Zealand actor and comedian who also plays music and makes films. He and Bret McKenzie released several albums as Flight of the Conchords, a comedy music act, and won a Grammy for Best Comedy Album with The Distant Future EP. They created a BBC and HBO television series also called Flight of the Conchords, which aired from 2007 to 2009 and brought him six Primetime Emmy nominations. His film debut came in the kung fu comedy Tongan Ninja (2002). Later roles included Eagle vs Shark (2007), Gentlemen Broncos (2009), which brought an Independent Spirit Award nomination, Men in Black 3 (2012), The BFG (2016), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and A Minecraft Movie (2025). He voiced characters in Rio (2011), Moana (2016), The Lego Batman Movie (2017) and Thelma the Unicorn (2024). With Taika Waititi he co-wrote, co-directed and starred in What We Do in the Shadows (2014), his directorial debut.

  1. Getting ready for a role

    Clement based the voice of Tamatoa, the giant coconut crab in Disney's Moana, on David Bowie. He voiced the character in both the English original and the Maori dub.

    Clement's first feature film role was in Tongan Ninja, a kung fu comedy directed by New Zealander Jason Stutter. He went on to work with Stutter on two more films.

    Jemaine Clement took on writing, directing and acting duties for the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, working alongside Taika Waititi in 2012. The film had its first showing at the Sundance Film Festival on 19 January 2014.

    In 2006, Clement starred in a series of Outback Steakhouse commercials that first aired during Super Bowl XL, playing an Australian and putting on an Australian accent.
