Plot summary
Benjamin Purvis lives with his mother Judith, who designs clothes and makes popcorn balls, and the two work at a women's retail store. In his spare time Benjamin writes science fiction, and he has finished Yeast Lords, a story about a hero named Bronco, modeled on Benjamin's late father, who contends with a villain over yeast. At a two-day camp for fantasy and science fiction writers, he attends lectures by his idol, Ronald Chevalier, who announces a contest for the campers. Fellow camper Tabatha encourages Benjamin to submit Yeast Lords, and she shows it to Lonnie Donaho, who runs a video production company and begins adapting it. When Chevalier's publisher rejects his latest manuscript, Chevalier takes Benjamin's story for his own.
