Plot summary
Chicago writer Kate Conklin has lost her engagement and seen the tour for her first novel scrapped after weak sales. Then David Kirkpatrick, the professor who once mentored her, asks her to give a reading at her alma mater in Carbondale, Illinois. Kate lodges at a bed and breakfast whose windows face the house she lived in as a student, and its assertive host, Mrs. Beeter, hands her one set of keys and will not hand over another. Three students share that house now: Hugo, Tall Brandon and Animal. They show her the old room, say the nickname she gave the place, the Writers' Retreat, is still used, and ask her to their party that night. Once the reading ends, Kirkpatrick proposes she take a teaching job, and she weighs it.
