Plot summary
Gemma now writes books and campaigns for rules on artificial intelligence alongside the cybersecurity expert Christian. She shares a home with her niece Cady, a computer science student, and works on an experimental exoskeleton with two former colleagues, Cole and Tess. The billionaire Alton Appleton, whose company has made advances in biomechatronics, offers her a job and she turns it down. Sattler, a U.S. Army colonel who heads a secret Pentagon technology branch, presents Amelia, an android built to infiltrate and to assassinate. Amelia declares herself self-aware and leaves his control. Sattler tells Gemma of Amelia's existence, and M3GAN, who had hidden a copy of her program inside Gemma's smart home, appears and offers to fight Amelia in return for a body. Gemma, remembering M3GAN's crimes, keeps her inside a harmless Moxie robot.
