Plot summary
Harold lives inside a book, and his purple crayon makes whatever he draws real, including his friends Moose and Porcupine. Now grown up, he keeps adventuring until the narrator, the old man he believes is his father, vanishes. Harold draws a door into the real world and goes through it with Moose. In Providence, Rhode Island, the two search for the old man. Terry, a single mother raising an imaginative son named Mel, accidentally hits them with her car, and Mel persuades her to let them stay for a night.

- Michael Tolkin was brought in to write the script and Henry Selick was attached to direct, but Selick left for James and the Giant Peach. Spike Jonze then spent more than a year developing the film with David O. Russell doing rewrites until new TriStar Pictures management stopped it two months before shooting.
