Plot summary
Moana has spent three years as Motunui's chieftess and wayfinder, sailing to nearby islands in search of people still linked to the ocean. When she returns from one voyage, her people name her the first master wayfinder in a thousand years. A vision then comes from her ancestor Tautai Vasa: the storm god Nalo sank Motufetu, the island that once joined all the islands, and if Moana cannot raise it, Motunui's people will go extinct. She gathers a crew: Loto, Moni, and Kele, along with her pig Pua and rooster Heihei, and they follow a comet across the sea. Maui, who has his own quarrel with Nalo, is also searching for Motufetu.

- Moana 2 started as a five-episode Disney+ series, but in January 2024 Walt Disney Studios president Alan Bergman told the team to shift rapidly to a feature film; the pivot was possible because animation work doesn't begin until the final year.
- Auliʻi Cravalho said Moana 2 was the first time a Disney princess was allowed to age: after being asked to raise her pitch to sound 16 for other Disney projects, she recorded Moana at 19 in her natural voice.
- Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, who took over songwriting from Lin-Manuel Miranda, are the youngest and the first all-female songwriting duo to write the songs for a Disney film.
- Walt Disney Music president Tom MacDougall hired songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear in 2021 after hearing their work on The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical; Lin-Manuel Miranda helped by giving Barlow a stack of books on writing musical-film lyrics.
