Plot summary
Tim Conrad is an analyst at Fender Financial, an equity firm whose specialty is distressed assets, and he has stretched his finances to look like the success he intends to become. A promotion to executive, and the marriage to his girlfriend Julie that he has staked on it, depend on one more hurdle: impressing his boss, Lance Fender, at a dinner where each executive brings an eccentric guest to be mocked without knowing it. Tim proposes a way to win the account of the Swiss multimillionaire Martin Mueller, and Julie, an art gallery curator, tells him to turn the dinner invitation down. Then Barry Speck steps into the road after a dead mouse, and Tim's car hits him. Barry works for the IRS and stuffs mice, arranging them into miniature dioramas, and Tim is sure he has found his guest.
