Plot summary
Moana is the daughter of Tui and Sina, who rule the island of Motunui. Her parents keep her from the water and train her to become chief, but the ocean chooses her to restore the heart of Te Fiti, the living island that brought life to the sea, after the demigod Maui stole it. When blight kills the island's plants and shrinks the fish catch, Moana proposes fishing beyond the reef; Tui forbids it, and she is overpowered by the tides. Her grandmother Tala shows her a hidden cavern of ships and tells her that Motunui's people once voyaged until Maui's theft made the ocean unsafe. Tala gives Moana the heart, and Moana sets sail on a camakau with her rooster Heihei, who has stowed away.

- In August 2025 it emerged that the studio had planned to use an AI-generated deepfake of Dwayne Johnson's face on a body double for some shots, working with AI company Metaphysic and with Johnson's approval, before abandoning the plan to avoid controversy over AI regulation in filmmaking.
- After a weak opening weekend, Deadline Hollywood estimated the remake could end up losing Disney between $100 million and $125 million.
