Plot summary
Three years after the events in Rio de Janeiro, Blu and Jewel are raising Bia, Carla and Tiago. Jewel thinks the children are growing too domesticated, while Blu keeps his city habits. When Linda and her husband Túlio spot a blue Spix's macaw on an expedition in the Amazon, Jewel wants the family to go and look for others of their kind; Blu agrees to please her. Their friends Rafael, Nico and Pedro come along to scout Carnival talent. In the jungle the family finds a flock of blue macaws hiding in an uncharted stretch of the forest, where Jewel meets her father Eduardo again. Eduardo distrusts humans, Big Boss, who leads an illegal logging crew, orders his men to hunt the birds, and the flightless Nigel plots revenge on Blu.

- Screenwriter Don Rhymer died from complications relating to his head and neck cancer diagnosis on 28 November 2012 while he was still working on the film, and the film was dedicated to him.
- Bruno Mars joined the cast as Roberto after director Carlos Saldanha caught his performance on Saturday Night Live, and during production Mars offered his own personal touches that better shaped his character's physical appearance, personality and voice.
- Miguel Ferrer voiced Big Boss, the hot-tempered head of the illegal logging activity, in what turned out to be Ferrer's final acting role before his death in 2017.
