Plot summary
Audie Murphy comes of age in a big, poor family of sharecroppers in Northeast Texas. His father leaves around 1939, and his mother struggles to feed nine children. As the eldest son, Murphy takes work with Mr. Houston, a neighboring farmer, to bring in money for his brothers and sisters. His mother dies in 1941, the younger children go to an elder sister, Corrine, and Mr. Houston persuades Murphy to enlist. The Marines reject him, and so do the Navy and the Army paratroopers, because he is small and looks young. The Army takes him in as a regular infantryman, and once he has trained he joins the 3rd Infantry Division in North Africa as a replacement. His squad mates include Johnson, Brandon, Kerrigan, Kovak, Swope and Valentino.

- Audie Murphy initially refused to play himself in the film of his own autobiography, recommending Tony Curtis, with whom he had made three Westerns: Sierra, Kansas Raiders and The Cimarron Kid. Producer Aaron Rosenberg and director Jesse Hibbs convinced the 30-year-old Murphy to star as himself at ages 17 to 20.
- During filming, Murphy allegedly alarmed and scared the crew and his colleagues by bringing loaded firearms on set instead of using the props provided, which was largely believed to be because of the post-traumatic stress disorder he suffered after his war service.
