Plot summary
Six American enlisted men are finishing their wartime service in Asia when Daru, a snake charmer, offers to show them the secret rite of the Lamians, worshipers of women who can take serpent form. In disguise they watch a dance to the cobra goddess, until a drunken Nick Hommel photographs the dancer. The cult discovers the intruders and its priest curses them; the men set the temple on fire to cover their escape, and a snake bites Nick on the road. Back in New York, Tom Markel loses Julia Thompson to Paul Able, and Lisa Moya moves into the apartment across the hall from him. Tom breaks into her apartment when he hears her scream, calms her, and persuades her to go out with him.
