Trailer

Plot summary

In the 23rd century, the United Planets ship C-57D completes a voyage of more than a year to Altair IV, searching for the science vessel Bellerophon, which went silent there two decades earlier. Dr. Edward Morbius, a scientist of that first expedition, tells the crew not to land, and Commander John J. Adams comes down anyway. Robby the Robot carries Adams and Lieutenants Jerry Farman and Doc Ostrow to Morbius' home, where Morbius recounts how the other expedition members were killed one after another by an unseen planetary force, and how the Bellerophon was destroyed as the last survivors fled. He says that he, his wife and their daughter Altaira came through unharmed. Rather than leave without instructions from Earth, Adams keeps his ship on Altair IV.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Forbidden Planet (1956)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The original Robby the Robot prop sold at a Bonhams auction in November 2017 for $5.3 million including buyer's premium, breaking the previous TCM-Bonhams record of $4 million for a Maltese Falcon prop and becoming the most valuable film prop ever auctioned.
  • The first performer inside the Robby the Robot costume, stuntman Frankie Darro, was fired shortly after an early scene because he had drunk five martinis at lunch and nearly toppled over while trying to walk in the expensive suit.
  • Robby the Robot cost roughly $125,000 to build, an enormous sum for a film prop at the time that ate up nearly 7% of the film's $1.9 million budget, equal to at least $1 million in 2017 dollars.
  • Anne Francis's revealing miniskirt costumes, designed by Helen Rose, got the film banned in Spain, where it did not screen until 1967.
  • Since Bebe and Louis Barron did not belong to the Musicians Union, their electronic work could not be considered for an Academy Award in either the soundtrack or sound effects categories, and this also necessitated the "electronic tonalities" credit.
  • Bebe and Louis Barron approached MGM producer Dore Schary at a Greenwich Village nightclub during a family Christmas visit to New York. Schary promised to give them a chance if they ever came to California, and was surprised when they showed up in Hollywood a few weeks later.
