Plot summary
North Africa during World War II. Sgt. Sullivan gathers Italian-Americans who can pass for Italian soldiers and takes them into a camp held by the Italians. Their orders are to hold the position and its weapons until an American battalion reaches the camp, posing as Italian soldiers and hosting enemy troops who pass through. Captain Valli, the officer in charge of the mission, will not have the captured Italians killed and keeps them hidden from the convoys that come and go. Sullivan, a Pacific veteran who came through that campaign with Dino, doubts Valli's leadership, and Valli considers him bloodthirsty and stubborn. The men find a woman, Adriana, already living at the camp.
