Biography
Henry Thomas is an American actor who started as a child actor and became known for playing Elliott Taylor in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), a role that won him a Young Artist Award and brought Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Saturn nominations. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he first appeared in the 1981 drama Raggedy Man at age eight, after which director Jack Fisk recommended him for E.T. His later films include Cloak & Dagger (1984), Valmont (1989), Legends of the Fall (1994), Gangs of New York (2002), and Dear John (2010). A Golden Globe nomination came for the television film Indictment: The McMartin Trial. He has often worked with Mike Flanagan since 2016, on films such as Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016), Gerald's Game (2017), and Doctor Sleep (2019), and on series including The Haunting of Hill House (2018), earning him a Saturn Award. He also wrote and played music with the San Antonio band The Blue Heelers.

Henry Thomas landed the lead in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial after his audition moved Steven Spielberg to say, "OK kid, you got the job."
First role
Thomas made his acting debut at eight in the 1981 Sissy Spacek drama Raggedy Man. Jack Fisk, who directed that film, then suggested Thomas for the lead in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Big break
Casting director Marci Liroff recalled that Thomas had the crew crying behind the camera within about three seconds of his E.T. audition.
Beyond film
In the 1990s, Thomas played guitar and wrote songs for The Blue Heelers, a San Antonio band. Though no record label signed the group, it put out an album, Twister, on its own.

Thomas worked with Nikki Sudden on the music for Honey Baby, a 2003 film by Mika Kaurismaki. Thomas wrote and performed four original songs for it, playing the fictional musician Tom Brackett.
