Plot summary
It is 1969 in Ludlow, Maine. Jud Crandall shares a home with his mother Kathy and his father Dan, and he is dating Norma. Jud is preparing to leave for the Peace Corps in Michigan. Manny Rivers, whose sister Donna lives with him nearby, wants to get out of Ludlow as well. Bill Baterman's son Timmy died by suicide after he came home from the Vietnam War. Bill drags the body into the pet cemetery and buries it. The family dog, Hendrix, digs near the grave, and a hand thrusts up from the soil and seizes the dog.
