Plot summary
In late 1952, Hank Williams is a country singer whose biggest years are behind him. He hires Silas, a young auto mechanic, to drive him through the Appalachian countryside to New Year's shows in Ohio and West Virginia. Williams uses the name Mr. Wells on the trip, and he and Silas spend the days on the road together with the singer's personal problems in tow. The film follows the relationship that forms between the two men, the adventures the journey brings, and the troubles Williams carries with him. His songs are heard in the film as covers rather than in his own recordings.
