Plot summary
Avery Chasten's sister, Elise, has been kidnapped, and her captors want $2 million. With no way to raise it quickly, Avery and his friends Max Minot and Brett Cambell seize Charlie Barret, a former mob figure whose real name is Carlo Bartolucci, and hold him so that his old connections will pay. They take him from a restaurant to Ira Reder's parents' house, passing the night off as a poker game until Ira arrives demanding an explanation. T. K., a medical student, warns that his drinking and the severed finger they show him, still wearing his signet ring, could kill him. Charlie calls his lawyer, who passes word to his bodyguard, Lono Veccio, and Lono starts looking for him, questioning people by force while Charlie sits with his captors and tells stories of his gangster years.

Suicide Kings has two alternate endings in which Charlie lets Max and Elise live, one where he reclaims the $1 million and one where Lono shoots holes in the boat. Test audiences disliked them, feeling Max and Elise had to pay for betraying their friends.
