Plot summary
In a small Welsh American settlement in 1850s Appalachia, ten-year-old Cadi Forbes is grieving her grandmother, the one person whose affection felt unconditional. She also feels responsible for an earlier family tragedy and believes her relatives hold it against her. During her grandmother's funeral rites, she glimpses the village sin-eater, a man who takes on the sins of the dead. Not long afterward, a Christian preacher arrives in the area and camps outside the isolated valley. Cadi talks with him, and his teaching about Jesus leads her to doubt that the sin-eater has any real power.
