Plot summary
Near the end of the Civil War, William leads a band of Confederate deserters. With his younger brother Sam, plus Clyde and Joseph, and joined by Todd, who escaped slavery, and Annabelle, a nurse with the army, he stages a robbery at a bank that holds a cache of Union gold coins, and people in the town are killed as the group plunders it. Needing somewhere to rest for the night, the robbers make camp at a plantation house that belonged to the uncle of their late comrade Jeffery Hollister. Crossing the fields, they come upon a strange scarecrow they believe is a crucified man, and they shoot a deformed creature. Joseph takes the horses to the barn while a storm builds, and the others settle into a house that should be empty.
