Plot summary
American orphan Cody Walpole lives in Australia with Gaza, a friend of his late father, who takes care of him. Cody is always inventing, and his latest machine, a rail bike, carries him downhill to school past a crowd of kids on bikes, among them Wendy, the girl he likes. Riding into the Devil's Knob wildlife preserve with Wendy and her sister Jane, he comes upon the deserted camp of a man named Neville. The pond nearby, Gaza tells him, is Donkegin Hole, home to a bunyip that eats rocks and breathes fire. Cody, who favors a plesiosaur or something like the Loch Ness Monster, decides to learn for himself what is down there.

- The film was originally directed by Russell Hagg, but the producer and writer were unhappy with the progress and tracked down Brian Trenchard-Smith, who had just finished an episode of Five Mile Creek. He accepted because he liked the script and wanted to work with Henry Thomas.
