The family is still grieving the death of Alice's husband, Roger. When the bank threatens to take the house, Lina suggests a Ouija board could bring in more business. Alice tries one and unknowingly reaches a spirit named Marcus. Doris uses the board on her own, hoping to speak with her father, and the spirit leads her to a pouch of hidden cash. Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Because the 2014 film Ouija was a commercial success but a critical failure, producer Jason Blum deliberately wanted something very different. Director Mike Flanagan, who says he has an "allergy to sequels," was allowed to make the period family horror film he wanted.
- To make the film look as though it were made in the 1970s, Mike Flanagan screened the 1980 film The Changeling for his director of photography "like ten times," and the pair decided to use only technology available at the time.
- Universal Pictures opened and promoted the film using the studio's own 1963-1990 logo, which had been designed by Universal Title and Optical for MCA Inc.
