Plot summary
In Gregory, Texas, during World War II, Nita Longley raises her two sons, Harry and Henry, alone. Four years after splitting from her unfaithful husband, she works as the telephone company's only switchboard operator, on call day and night. She asks her boss, Mr. Rigby, to move her to a secretarial job with regular hours, but he tells her wartime has frozen her position and everyone has to sacrifice. Her single status makes her the subject of town gossip and the target of two brothers, Calvin and Arnold Triplett, who peep in on her at home and intimidate her sons. A facially disfigured drifter known as the raggedy man is often seen dragging a lawnmower nearby. Late one evening Teddy, a sailor on leave, comes to her door wanting to telephone his fiancée.
