Plot summary
On November 5, 1975, Travis Walton and five co-workers spend the day logging in the White Mountains of northern Arizona. That night, as they drive back to town, the crew notices an unearthly red light through the treeline and comes upon a flying object. Walton leaves the truck to look, a bright beam strikes him and hurls him backward, and the frightened men drive off. When Mike Rogers returns to retrieve him, Walton is gone. Sheriff Blake Davis and Lieutenant Frank Watters question the loggers, and Watters learns of friction between Allan Dallis and Walton and of Dallis's criminal record, so he suspects foul play. A large search party finds no sign of the missing man, and neighbors turn the crew into outcasts.

- Director Robert Lieberman suspected Travis Walton's account was a hoax, saying his gut feeling was that it started out as a gag: “They probably laced their beer at the end of the day with a little acid or something and then they put on a show for these guys.”
- While working on the film, Robert Patrick learned that he was related to Mike Rogers: he contacted the Mormons in his family and found out that through marriage he was related, then called Rogers to ask how he had been feeling during it all.
- The X-Files creator Chris Carter and executive producer Frank Spotnitz were impressed by Robert Patrick's performance in the film, which led to his casting as FBI Special Agent John Doggett for the series' eighth season in 2000.
- The film is based on Travis Walton's 1978 book The Walton Experience, documenting his alleged experience of alien abduction, with a screenplay by Tracy Tormé; Walton and his wife make cameo appearances in the film.
- Robert Patrick, who had felt typecast in villainous roles following Terminator 2: Judgment Day, gained weight and grew a beard for his audition to play Mike Rogers.
- Screenwriter Tracy Tormé has said that executives found Walton's own account boring, and insisted on the changes that were made for the film.
- As of 2023, Fire in the Sky was the last feature theatrical film to be based on an alleged extraterrestrial abduction.
