Plot summary
William Ludlow leaves the army, unwilling to serve a government that has betrayed Native Americans, and settles in a far corner of Montana. With One Stab he builds a ranch where his three sons, Alfred, Tristan and Samuel, grow up. Decker, once an outlaw, lives on the ranch with his Cree wife Pet and their daughter Isabel Two. Ludlow's wife Isabel cannot bear the Montana winters and returns to the East Coast. In 1914 Samuel comes home from Harvard with Susannah, the woman he plans to marry, and says he will enlist to fight Germany in the war in Europe.
