Biography

Herbert Marshall was an English actor who began on the stage in Britain and North America and became a Hollywood leading man in the 1930s and 1940s, before shifting to character roles. Born in London in 1890 to two stage performers, he made his screen debut in the silent film Mumsie and first appeared in an American picture in the 1929 version of The Letter. Blonde Venus (1932) brought him fame with the American public, and he starred in Murder! (1930), Trouble in Paradise (1932), Foreign Correspondent (1940), The Letter (1940) and The Little Foxes (1941), often cast as decent husbands. Later he took supporting parts in films such as The Razor's Edge (1946), The Enchanted Cottage (1945) and The Fly (1958). He also starred in the radio series The Man Called X, acted on television, and in 1960 was honored with a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Marshall narrated "The Lodger" in July 1940, the Suspense series' first audition show, and he went on to appear on the program 20 times.

Marshall's stage debut is generally given as The Adventure of Lady Ursula in 1911, though other sources say 1909. He also recalled playing a footman with Eric Blore in The Arcadians.
Big break
Marshall was cast in a good role in Trouble in Paradise against his company's wishes, and Lubitsch thought him peculiarly suited to it.
